Initial Oral Examination
Your initial oral examination includes a visual examination, charting, periodontal probing, diagnosis and treatment recommendations. We will also take x-rays based on the concerns we have for your dental health. The x-rays could include the panoramic x-ray to show all the teeth, periapical x-rays to see the roots of teeth, bite-wing x-rays for proper diagnosis of proximal decay of posterior teeth.

Other tests and models may be recommended based on your needs.

Simple toothaches can often be relieved by rinsing the mouth to clear it of debris and other matter. Sometimes, a toothache can be caused or aggravated by a piece of debris lodged between the tooth and another tooth. Avoid placing an aspirin between your tooth and gum to relieve pain, because the dissolving aspirin can actually harm your gum tissue. Read More...

Dental Emergencies
Our goal is to help you to minimize the risk of emergency treatment. This is why we try to treat you with a comprehensive plan that will help you to offset the possibility of unforseen pain or tooth breakage. Read More...

Virtually all the dental fillings we perform today are tooth-colored, resin restorations. We do not recommend replacing existing silver amalgam fillings if they are healthy and providing good service. We do replace them when esthetics are a concern.

Dental Hygiene

Regular prophylaxis is a requirement to maintain and prevent dental problems. We have three knowledgable and experienced dental hygienists to provide care.

Periodontal Treatment

In addition to dental hygiene appointments, many patients have more advanced needs to maintain their periodontal health. Periodontal health means the health of the supporting tissues of the teeth, specifically the gums and bone around the teeth. We use subgingival treatment and we try to stay up to date on the latest treatments available. Read about Perio Protect at this link.....

Bonding is a process in which an enamel-like material is applied to a tooth`s surface, sculpted to an ideal shape, hardened, and then polished for an ideal smile. This procedure usually can be accomplished in a single visit. Read More...

Crowns and Bridges
Crowns are synthetic caps, usually made of a material like porcelain, placed on the top of a tooth. Crowns are typically used to restore a tooth's function and appearance following a restorative procedure such as a root canal. When decay in a tooth has become so advanced that large portions of the tooth must be removed, crowns are often used to restore the tooth. Read More...

Dr. Mams has been treating orthodontic patients for over 18 years. Each patient is evaluated for individual needs. In some cases, early interception can be done at ages as early as 7 or 8. We have a busy practice with adolescents and adults. We place an emphasis on doing treatment without extractions when possible, and with emphasis on jaw position, airway and TMJ health.

Teeth Whitening
Whitening procedures have effectively restored the smile of people with stained, dull, or discolored teeth. The darker tissue of your teeth, the dentin, can become exposed as the outer layer of enamel is worn away by the effects of aging or things like caffeine and tobacco. Read More...

Root Canal Therapy
Root canals are tiny passageways that branch off from beneath the top of the tooth, coursing their way vertically downward, until they reach the tip of the root. We do many root canals and refer to an endodontist when necessary to achieve the best outcome. Read More...

TMJ Treatment

TMJ treatment involves finding the cause of jaw problems and eliminating them. Many times this involves controlling habits and finding a correct and stable jaw position.

Snoring/Sleep Apnea

Understanding sleep is one of the fastest growing areas of medicine. Snoring can be a nuisance and a sign of a larger medical condition know as Obstructive Sleep Apnea. We can evaluate your snoring and when necessary work with other medical professionals to diagnose your sleep status. Dental appliances can prevent snoring and treat mild to moderate levels of sleep apnea.

Dr. Mams sees patients for snoring and sleep apnea at Tygart Valley Medical Specialties (304)637-6302. Patients need to be evaluated by Jenny L. Cross, MD and when oral appliances can be useful, she will refer them to Dr. Mams for evaluation and treatment.

Implants are synthetic structures that are placed in the area of the tooth normally occupied by the root. Implants are anchored to the jawbone or metal framework on the bone and act as a foundation for an artificial tooth or permanent bridge. In some cases, implants can be used to attach dentures. We work with an Oral Surgeon who places the implant and after an appropriate healing period, place the restoration whether that is a crown, a bridge, or a denture. Read More...
